🔆I wrote very formally (for me) about Empathy at work in the last newsletter. I wanted to try it out. I am more of a talker than a writer, so sharing these newsletters is an experiment for me. That said, everything I wrote is how I see the world and the workplace. So let’s put it in simple, actionable terms.
Yes, Empathy supports mental health and wellbeing, including reduced burnout, absenteeism, and stress-related illnesses. It improves communication and speeds up recovery when there is workplace conflict.
We know why Empathy at work is important, but how do you DO it?
Yes, there is an importance in maintaining and growing businesses, because the company needs to be healthy to create a healthy space for humans and offer financial security.
What makes sense to me and has worked well when communicating things like objectives, policies, and procedures is to look at the business as its own entity, separate from the people, but equally important.
The perspective I bring to all conversations is: Is this good for the business and the individual(s)? If the answer is yes, then it is a working option; if the answer is no, then we have to keep working on it.
I have been with one team for eight years now. In general terms, I would be considered the manager. I resist that term because the title "manager" to me implies I have control over. I don't believe that is the case. I have influence, and I take that seriously.
I intend to influence those I work with to see a bigger picture, believe there are more options, perceive their impact on others, understand that their professional and personal goals are within their circle of possibility, and recognize their responsibility.
If you take care of the people, the business will take care of itself.
Being perceptive to the needs of people and businesses separately and taking actions from this mindset is how I foster psychological safety in the workplace.
Empathy is practice and intention mixed together when taking action.
I prefer 'Empathy at Work' as an overarching description of what I do.
The phrase' employee wellbeing' makes me a little uncomfortable, because it removes the humanness of the individual.
Using this lens has been successful in building a diverse and inclusive workplace full of innovation and creativity, because everyone feels safe and comfortable taking risks and sharing their ideas.
We trust that even in conflict, we have each other's humanness in mind.

🔆Empathy in the workplace remains a hot topic because it directly impacts employee well-being, productivity, and retention.
Empathy is the foundation of psychological safety, fosters stronger relationships between employees and leaders, and drives innovation.
Here's a look at the key impacts of Empathy at Work:
Empathy and Employee Well-being:
Empathy plays a crucial role in supporting employee mental health, especially during stressful periods or challenging situations.
Empathetic leaders can recognize and address burnout symptoms before they become too severe.
Studies show that workplaces with higher levels of empathy experience lower rates of stress-related illnesses and absenteeism.
Empathy helps foster a culture of care and support, which is linked to improved morale and longer employment with an organization.
Empathy in Leadership and Management fosters stronger communication and, consequently, deeper relationships with their teams. This happens by showing genuine care, listening and validating feelings. When this is done effectively, there is a better understanding and acceptance of different perspectives.
Conflict Resolution is easier and more efficient when all parties are acknowledged, with supportive actions that address the needs of both individuals and the business.
When effort, time, and curiosity are brought into the workplace, it leads to a diverse and inclusive workplace full of innovation and creativity, because everyone feels safe and comfortable taking risks and sharing their ideas.
A workplace culture that values Empathy can lead to increased employee loyalty, higher levels of productivity, and more resilience when change is necessary to keep up with the demands of your industry.

🔆Where is the Empathy in your Workplace?
Hi there,
Learning about the 3 Layers of Empathy in teams really helped me dig deeper and fine tune small practices that can help.
Very simply put, there is empathy with Self, understanding and appreciating yourself.
Empathy with others, understanding and connecting with others and Collective Energy, what is the general culture of empathy in a group or team.
Empathy is more than just a buzzword — it’s a skill that shapes how we connect, communicate, and collaborate. Learning about the 3 layers of empathy in teams really helped me dig deeper and fine tune small practices that can help.
Empathy with self — the foundation of emotional resilience and individual growth.
Empathy with others — meaningful relationships through understanding and care. And Collective empathy — culture where empathy is not lip service, but embedded in everyday practice.
Empathy isn’t just about being “nice.” It’s about being human — and building workplaces where everyone can thrive.
When I spoke about it with individuals, it took a lot of pressure off of them and helped them digest how to adjust and where to be mindful of empathy in the workplace.
I designed a quiz to help individuals and teams see where you score at all three levels of empathy.
I would like to grow the understanding of where small businesses are in these three layers so I can offer useful support. I would like to get to 1000 responses to the quiz. If you would like to contribute to the survey, you can take the Empathy at Work Quiz here and see where the empathy is in your workplace.
You will get a personalized report with a few tips you can start practicing right away.
If you enjoy it and find it practical and useful I’d love it if you pass it onto you co workers or anyone in your network that you think might find it interesting and useful.
If you’d like to start a conversation, ask more questions, or offer any other insight or suggestion, just reply to this email.
